Islamic Principles for the Muslim’s Attitude during Fitan (trials, tribulations, afflictions, calamities)
This is the translation of an extremely important book by the eminent scholar Ash-Shaikh Saaleh Aal-Shaikh. In it are essential guidelines from the Sunnah and the example of the sahabah, on how a Muslim should think and behave in situations of tribulations, trials or calamities.
Allah’s Messenger used to frequently seek refuge with Allah from Fitan. And he used to warn against Fitan. Therefore Imam al-Bukharee (rahimahullah) began, ‘The Book of Fitan’ in his Saheeh (al-Bukharee) with the following chapter:
Chapter: The Saying of Allah, “Fear the Fitna which affects not only those of you who do wrong…” and the warnings of Allah’s Messenger against Fitan.
So it is necessary for us to warn (ourselves and others) against Fitan before it arises and stay far away from any thing that might take us
close to or lead to Fitan.

Faith in the Angels

Shaikh Salih al-Fawzan (hafidahullah) writes in his treatise, al-Eeman bil-Malaaikah wa-Athruhu fi-Hayatil-Ummah,

If he knows that there are angels assigned to watch over him day and night, he becomes cautious that they may write something (that he says or does) which is not befitting and not in the best interest of his well-being in the hereafter.

The issue of Eeman, its components, levels and that which negates it (i.e., Major Kufr) are fundamental concepts of Islam. It should be a Muslim’s utmost concern to understand these issues as was understood by the first and best generation of Islam.
This booklet is an attempt to educate the reader about the moderate understanding of Ahlus-Sunnah wal-Jama’ah concerning the components of Eeman and Kufr and to warn against the misguided views of those who have been mislead on the subject.
Exaggerations in understanding the verses and Ahadeeth of warning lead the Khawarij to overstate the status of sinners amongst Muslims until they regarded anyone who commits a major sin to be a disbeliever, who will not be forgiven. They lightened the extremely serious issue of Takfeer (declaring someone to be a Kafir) and consequently, off-shoots of Khawarij caused blood-shed throughout Islamic history, by revolting against legitimate rulers they saw as sinful.
